Aaron Edwards with Diversity Counseling in Scott
I went to Aaron Edwards as I was seeking a therapist familiar with my experiences. He seemed very kind and understanding at first, but that quickly changed. He insisted I had to attend group therapy, which was run like an AA meeting and included a heavy religious influence, when I have both severe social anxiety (which he did not address) and religious trauma (also unaddressed, and worse, dismissed). These meetings were full of bullying from him for any failure to meet assigned goals, and he would encourage other attendees to join in the bullying.
In addition, in the handful of one on one sessions he reluctantly deigned to offer, he blamed me for my childhood abuse and dismissed the severity of it. I often left sessions crying from him berating me, but continued to go because he held a letter of recommendation over my head.
At our final session, when I told him I would be seeking treatment from another professional, he lost his temper, angrily telling me that I was making a huge mistake, used him, and was "betraying" him by leaving his practice, and would not allow me to leave until he had finished and tore up the letter of recommendation in front of me.
I reported him to the board, but nothing was done. I just hope my review here will help someone else avoid him.
